This isn't a traditional pesto and doesn't pretend to be. Hickory smoked tomatoes make the base, Calabrian chillies bring a proper lingering heat, and parmesan and pine nuts keep it rich. It's strong stuff, so start with a little.

How to use it

• Toss through pasta.
• Stir through butter beans.
• Dollop on soup.
• Spoon over fried or scrambled eggs.
• Spread on toast.
